On MEG forward modelling using multipolar expansions.

چکیده
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive functional imaging modality based on the measurement of the external magnetic field produced by neural current sources within the brain. The reconstruction of the underlying sources is a severely ill-posed inverse problem typically tackled using either low-dimensional parametric source models, such as an equivalent current dipole (ECD), or high-dimensional minimum-norm imaging techniques. The inability of the ECD to properly represent non-focal sources and the over-smoothed solutions obtained by minimum-norm methods underline the need for an alternative approach. Multipole expansion methods have the advantages of the parametric approach while at the same time adequately describing sources with significant spatial extent and arbitrary activation patterns. In this paper we first present a comparative review of spherical harmonic and Cartesian multipole expansion methods that can be used in MEG. The equations are given for the general case of arbitrary conductors and realistic sensor configurations and also for the special cases of spherically symmetric conductors and radially oriented sensors. We then report the results of computer simulations used to investigate the ability of a first-order multipole model (dipole and quadrupole) to represent spatially extended sources, which are simulated by 2D and 3D clusters of elemental dipoles. The overall field of a cluster is analysed using singular value decomposition and compared to the unit fields of a multipole, centred in the middle of the cluster, using subspace correlation metrics. Our results demonstrate the superior utility of the multipolar source model over ECD models in providing source representations of extended regions of activity.

From Dipoles to Multipoles : Parametric Solutions to the Inverse Problem in MEG
In order to reconcile the advantages of the classical dipole model and minimum norm imaging techniques, higherorder parametric source models based on multipolar expansions of the source have been suggested. We evaluate the ability of dipolar and multipolar MEG source estimation frameworks to localize spatially extended patches of cortical activity. The results show the performance of the differ...
متن کاملMeg ( Magnetoencephalography ) Multipolar Modeling of Distributed Sources Using Multiple Signal
We describe the use of truncated multipolar expansions for producing dynamic images of cortical neural activation from measurements of the magnetoencephalogram. We use a signal-subspace method to find the locations of a set of multipolar sources, each of which represents a region of activity in the cerebral cortex. Our method builds up an estimate of the sources in a recursive manner, i.e. we f...

متن کاملHybrid MEG source characterization by cortical remapping and imaging of parametric source models
Reliable estimation of the local spatial extent of neural activity is a key to the quantitative analysis of MEG sources across subjects and conditions. In association with an understanding of the temporal dynamics among multiple areas, this would represent a major advance in electrophysiological source imaging. Parametric current dipole approaches to MEG (and EEG) source localization can rapidl...
متن کاملValidation and Application of Realistic Head Modelling to MEG.
While realistic head modelling is nowadays frequently applied in EEG source analysis, it is only rarely used in the evaluation of MEG measurements. One reason is the lower dependency of MEG signals on the volume conductor geometry. However, a simultaneous evaluation of EEG and MEG is highly desirable for an accurate source reconstruction when considering the complementary strengths of these two...
